Lisa Stoffel | Colors of Courage

On Saturday, March 24, 2018, I once again will enthusiastically participate in Pink Vail to support current cancer patients and survivors, like myself !!! , at the Shaw Regional Cancer Center.  We need your support!

Proceeds from Pink Vail DIRECTLY benefit patient care and survivorship programs under the umbrella of the SPIRIT OF SURVIVAL.  These programs include free fitness classes, nutritional coaching, and emotional support services for patients, survivors, and their families.  Each area is staffed with experts not only in their field but with special training and certifications to work with cancer patients.  These programs have proven to benefit patient outcomes but are not typically covered by insurance.  So, with your help, ALL CANCER PATIENTS (regardless of cancer type) at Shaw can have access to these important supportive care programs.

Tom and I have gotten a great deal out of these programs while I was in treatment and continue to today.  While in treatment, these services helped us manage the shock and treatment phase without sinking under the weight of my diagnosis.  We worked one-on-one with a trainer at the Fit for Survival Gym, attended Restorative Yoga classes, I had massage and acupuncture treatments.  As I transitioned from patient to survivor, I attended Expressive Art classes to facilitate my emotional recovery and healing.  And today, I continue to access nutritional counseling and acupuncture treatments to help mitigate the side effects of my continued medications.

The nutritional component of the Spirit of Survival has proven to be a key resource for me and was for my father-in-law when he was being treated last year.  Given the removal of several digestive organs to treatment pancreatic cancer, my father-in-law had to learn how to manage his nutrition by dramatically modifying his diet.  The support and education he received at Shaw was invaluable.   For me, I helped pilot the novel nutrition and exercise program 3 years ago called SLIM FOR SURVIVAL to help reduce my rate of cancer recurrence.  I still live the SLIM For SURVIVAL lifestyle today (more or less wink).  Moreover, I consult with the Oncology Nutritionist regularly as information about how foods can positively or adversely impact health continues to evolve.

it is rare for a rural, resort town to provide such comprehensive and cutting edge care.  Shaw is unique and, truly, exists because of generous donors, passionate volunteers and talented clinicians who are dedicated to restoring the health and vitality of their cancer patients!

We are LUCKY to have it right here in our backyard!
